How to Make a Board Game

Creating a board game for you and your friends to play is a great way to spend a rainy afternoon or two. You can invent a board game by yourself, or invite your friends and family over to make one together. It is also fun to use board games as learning tools in the classroom. Follow these steps to create your own board game, and enjoy the chance to show off your inventiveness!

  1. First: Start with an idea

The most important aspect of any board game is how it is played. You need to start with a good idea on which you can build. If you are creating board games for learning, some popular subjects are math, science, spelling or vocabulary.

  2. Second: Design your board

Now it is time to design the game board. You should keep it bright and colorful; games that are pleasing to the eye are much more fun to play. Add special spaces or a spin wheel to spice up game play.

  3. Third: Design your pieces and other accessories

You need to create tokens for each player to move around the board. You may also need to purchase (or make) dice to allow for the proper moving of spaces. It is also easy to create a spin wheel to determine how many spaces each player is allowed to move on his or her turn. If your game requires cards for play (such as Monopoly's "Chance" or "Community Chest" cards), create them now.

  4. Fourth: Write the rules of gameplay

When your board and pieces are completed, write out the rules for playing the game. Play by yourself a few times to ensure your new rules are comprehensive; it is never any fun to play a game when the rules are constantly changing
