Monopoly Board Game Strategy

Applying strategy when playing Monopoly ensures a more successful game play and increases your odds of winning. There are a number of strategies which improve the game play and which you can implement with very little practice or preplanning.

Buy properties wisely

Always buy property when it completes a set for you or when it prevents someone else from completing a set. Completing a set of property ensures that you can charge higher rents and build houses to grow your investments. It gives you leverage over other players and creates a means of generating greater income. Preventing someone else from completing a set gives you an enviable and quickly liquidable asset should you find yourself in trouble.

Know what squares are frequently landed on

Odds of the die and basic mathematics alter movement around the board and make it more likely for players to land on some spaces than on others. Jail is the most landed-on square of the board in part because there are squares and cards that send players to jail. Build paying bail into your budget because you are likely to land there at some point. After Jail, Illinois Avenue is the most landed-on space. Make every effort to purchase it. After Illinois Avenue, the most frequently landed-on properties are the railroads.

Monopoly is a great game for family game night, but it takes several hours to complete. After mastering the basics of play, start building strategy into your game to make yourself more competitive and to make game play more interesting.
