George Parker founded the company in 1883 to revolutionize the board game industry. He created a board game, Banking, for his own enjoyment at age 16 and sought its publication at his brother's insistence. Prior to Parker Brothers, board games taught lessons and morals. Parker believed in fun board games. He typically designed games based on current events, such as the Alaskan gold rush. Parker Brothers also produced the first Nerf ball, which subsequently transformed into an entire line of balls, dart guns and bows and arrows. Parker Brothers is currently a subsidiary of Hasbro. To date, Parker Brothers has published more than 1,800 games. From 1963-1985, General Mills owned Parker Brothers. Prior to its purchase by General Mills, Parker Brothers was a family-owned company.
