Video games help some escape everyday life, a few hours at a time. Forming connections and friendships with others, in game and online, it is also a way to feel part of a community. However, when taken to excess, a video game addiction can form. These players lose touch with reality and forget what is important; they begin to focus solely on the game experience.

Signs of addiction

When playing games interferes with the normal activities of everyday life, then the player is very likely addicted. Losing interest in all other aspects of life, neglect of physical needs like hygiene, sleep and eating, is another sign. Violent, angry or destructive behavior when there is no opportunity to play is another sign.

Treatment of addiction

Some experts feel one of the most effective treatments for addiction is to either limit access, or to completely wean the player off the gaming experience altogether. Keeping logs of game time is one way to bring accountability into the situation. However, if the player feels they might lie, having a friend or family member monitor their behavior is one possible workaround. Taking the problem seriously, early on, is a big factor in keeping it from spiraling even more out of control.

To many people, video game addiction sounds like a joke. Who would not like to play games all day? However, for many players and their families, it is not all fun and games. With proper treatment, most patients recover, and some are able to play video games in moderation once again.
